Kids all over Middle Tennessee are getting ready to head back to school. You can feel that familiar mix of excitement and nerves in the air. Backpacks are being stuffed, lunchboxes are being found at the back of cabinets, and parents are quietly hoping they’ve remembered everything on the supply list. But beneath all the usual backtoschool chaos, there’s something deeper happening: our kids are stepping into another year of growing, learning, and becoming who God made them to be.

As classrooms are changing, technology is racing forward, and kids are navigating a world that asks a lot of them, parents have an opportunity. Our kids are figuring out friendships, dealing with pressures, and learning how to make choices that shape their character. For Christian families, this season can present a moment to pray over our children with intention, asking God to guide them, protect them, and help them shine His light wherever they go.

Being a light for Christ doesn’t have to look like grand gestures. It’s the small, everyday moments choosing kindness when someone is not nice, telling the truth even when it’s uncomfortable, including the kid who sits alone at lunch, or offering grace when tempers flare. These simple acts speak loudly. They show others what love looks like in real life, not just in words.

Also, something our kids need more than ever in this world is wisdom. They’re surrounded by information, opinions, and influences from every direction. Asking God to give them discernment helps them navigate all of it with the power of Holy Spirit. Wisdom helps them choose good friends, handle challenges, and stay grounded in truth even when the world feels loud.

Of course, every parent thinks about protection too. Not just physical safety, but emotional and spiritual covering. We want our kids to walk into school knowing they’re not alone, knowing God goes with them into every classroom, every conversation, every tough moment. That kind of confidence changes how they face the year ahead.

Here’s a prayer you can speak over your children as they begin this new school year:

Heavenly Father, as our children step into the 2026 school year, we ask for your protection over every part of their day. Protection for their minds, their hearts, their friendships, and their steps. Give them wisdom beyond their years, helping them see truth clearly and choose what is good. Let your light shine through them in the way they speak, act, and treat others. When challenges come, give them courage. When they feel unsure, remind them you are near. Cover them with your peace and guide them with your love. We place them in your hands and trust you completely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
